Meeting Minutes of September 16, 2009

People interested in Lagro Tourism met at the Town Hall on Wednesday, September 16 at 1:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting and introductions by those in attendance was moderated by Carolyn Hegel.

Briefly, a few people met in August to talk about Lagro tourism. From that meeting, a representation went to the Town Board on September 7 to talk to Town Board members and ask for a presence in the Lagro community. This request was granted. After the initial request from the Board, people from all areas of the community...business, organizations, churches and founding families, were contacted and were asked to be represented on this Board.

A walking tour of Lagro ensued.

Paul Bever was present at St. Patrick's Church to talk to the group about the history of the church and entertained us all with lively stories of Lagro of years gone by. We wish to thank him for his time and his knowledge of not only the church, but of the Lagro community as well.

The walking tour continued to the log cabin, which was recently decorated by the Lawson's and Lena Gray. It was enormously enjoyed by all in attendance and John told us of the history of the locks as well. We finished our walking tour with a cool refreshment at the Lagro Cafe, courtesy of Mary Ross.

The meeting came to a conclusion with the following ideas:

1. Our first event will include the Bazaar at the school on December 5, 2009. Besides the Bazaar at the school, the Log Cabin will be decorated for the holidays, the canal lock will be lighted, and we will try to entice various groups to come to the area of the log cabin. Ideas consisted of kettle corn, crafts, hot beverages, etc. Different organizations and church groups from the town could be represented in this area. While the events of the day will remain free, each organization could charge a small fee to cover costs for the goods they would be selling at the log cabin area.

2. Jason Gillespie might be able to give sleigh rides or carriage rides, depending on the weather.

3. Later in the day, carols could be sung at St. Patrick's Church.

4. A holiday decorating contest could be part of the festivities, with those homes wanting to be part of the contest decorated by December 1.

5. Bethel Church, approximately three miles from Lagro, is hosting a Live Nativity and the day could be concluded at Bethel.

Other ideas that we sould like to have ready by December 1 is a calendar of Lagro. Whether this would be with current pictures, or using pictures from the past, of which there is a vast surplus, has yet to be decided the group.

On Monday evening, September 21 at 6:30 p.m., the group will again meet at the Town Hall to continue finalization of ideas for the December 5 event.

All people of Lagro are invited to this meeting. If you have friends or neighbors who would like to be a part of the group, don't wait for them to be called...invite them to come with you!! For the Tourism Board of Lagro to ever be a success, we need willing hearts and working hands. This is about all of us! Our community has so much to give to our county and our state....it's time we let our light shine!!!
